Okay, I get it...software piracy is not "theft" in the sense that the owner has only lost potential profit, not actual lost value. And, as a matter of fact, it's not even lost potential profit unless the pirate would have paid for the software had he not been able to steal it.
But what is the real practical lesson here? We all agree software designers need to have their IP protected in order to have incentive...so at the end of the day, pirates are going to be punished no matter what you call it.
